Rats and Mice in Spring, Why Early Action Matters
Rodent problems are not just a winter issue. While rats and mice often move indoors during colder months, spring is still a key time for infestation problems in Ireland. By March and April, rodents that sheltered through winter may already be well established in wall cavities, roof spaces, under floors, stock rooms, service ducts or external harbourage areas. That means many spring callouts are not new problems at all, but problems that have become easier to spot.
In the home, early signs can be subtle: scratching noises at night, droppings in cupboards, gnaw marks, chewed food packaging, or a strong musty smell in enclosed areas. In commercial settings, the risks are even wider. Rodents can damage wiring, contaminate surfaces, packaging and stock, and undermine trust if staff or customers notice evidence of activity. For food businesses especially, rodent presence is a serious issue. FSAI guidance states clearly that pests can carry harmful bacteria, contaminate food and create financial and reputational damage.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that a trap from a hardware shop will solve the problem. It may catch one animal, but it does not explain how rodents are entering, where they are nesting, or whether the wider infestation has spread. Professional pest control is valuable because it is systematic. A qualified technician looks at the full picture: species identification, level of activity, entry points, access to food and water, harbourage, treatment options, monitoring and prevention. CRRU best practice guidance also emphasises that rodenticides should be used within proper training and control measures.
For businesses, a proactive rodent control plan is often far better than waiting for a complaint or failed inspection. The Irish Pest Control Association notes that even very clean premises can still attract or receive pests, which is why routine contracts matter.
Spring is a good time to inspect external walls, drains, bin areas, loading bays, sheds and rooflines. A small gap, damaged vent or poorly managed waste area can be enough to sustain rodent activity for weeks before anyone realises.
